MASKED OWL Tyto novaehollandiae 33–55cm

Larger, more robust than Eastern Barn Owl, with rounder facial disc; legs fully feathered, heavier feet/talons. Size, colour vary. : larger. Voice: drawn-out screeching ‘cush-cush-sh-sh’; loud musical shriek. Habitat: forests; open woodlands; farmlands. Where: widespread. Uncommon resident.

EASTERN GRASS OWL Tyto longimembris 33–38cm

Other name: Grass Owl.

Upperparts rich yellow–buff, marbled blue–black with dark speckles; legs long. : facial disc/underparts white. : larger; pale orange–buff with dark speckles. Voice: hissing scream; also soft, cricket-like chirruping trill. Habitat: grasslands; heathlands; grassy woodland; canefields. Where: widespread. Sparse resident; irruptive.
